Understand tourism in new ways with the LIVE dashboard

A new interactive data dashboard with Longitudinal Indicators for the Visitor Economy (LIVE) Framework has just been released by Tourism Research Australia (TRA). It is designed to provide a more comprehensive picture of the sustainable growth of Australia's visitor economy through 21 indicators across economic, social, environmental, and institutional dimensions.

The LIVE Framework was supported by the Industry Data and Expert Analysis (IDEA) working group, established under the first phase of THRIVE 2030. Thanks to assistance from industry, academic and government experts, the new LIVE Framework provides users with a wealth of information, including:

  • The greenhouse gas emissions intensity of activity in certain sectors of the visitor economy, which can be directly compared with other countries
  • International comparisons on the perceived accessibility of Australia’s tourism industry
  • The level of visitors during the year in local areas, relative to the size of the local population
  • The economic value of tourism to Australia’s economy
  • And much more!

The graph below shows an example of LIVE Framework data and how many visitors per resident across the year for Byron Bay.

The LIVE dashboard is available now on TRA’s website and will be updated on a regular basis as new data becomes available.

New national partnership for First Nations tourism

A new First Nations Visitor Economy Partnership to support greater Indigenous participation in the tourism sector, and better economic opportunities has been announced by Minister for Trade and Tourism, Senator the Hon Don Farrell and Minister for Indigenous Australians, Senator the Hon Malarndirri McCarthy.

The partnership will bring together First Nations tourism industry representatives from across the country. It will provide leadership on respectfully embedding Australia’s rich cultural heritage into our visitor experiences.

Establishing the partnership is a key action under THRIVE 2030, Australia’s national strategy for the visitor economy. Austrade led work on designing the partnership in collaboration with First Nations industry representatives, the National Indigenous Australians Agency, Tourism Australia, and state and territory governments.

‘We know that domestic and international visitors are increasingly seeking unique First Nations experiences as part of their travels,’ says Minister Farrell. ‘This presents great opportunities for value-added tourism and job creation in Australia’s regions and First Nations communities.’

The Partnership is the latest Australian Government measure – among grants, mentoring and strategic investment – to support First Nations tourism and promote the sustainable growth of the visitor economy.

Preparations are underway with States and Territories for selection of members and the first meeting of the Partnership in early 2025.
